Nourishing Communities. Delivering Independence.
More than a Meal, where every delivery brings nourishment, reassurance, and human connection—helping our neighbors live safely and independently at home.
A Brief History of Meal Delivery
Did you know that meal delivery programs began in the late 1800s as faith-based and community efforts to support people who were ill, homebound, or experiencing poverty?
After World War II, the modern Meals on Wheels model took shape in the United Kingdom, bringing hot meals directly to older adults who could no longer cook for themselves. This movement quickly spread across the globe.
In the United States, the Older Americans Act of 1965 accelerated growth by providing federal support for senior nutrition services. Today, Meals on Wheels programs are locally run nonprofits that offer more than meals—they provide connection, dignity, and daily safety checks that help older adults remain healthy and independent.
Homebound Meals…Serving Fort Wayne Since 1971
In response, Homebound Meals, Inc. began on March 1, 1971, in Fort Wayne when a group of concerned citizens partnered with the Medical Auxiliary Society to deliver four meals in Fort Wayne.
Operating from donated space at Trinity Episcopal Church, the program quickly grew as hospitals and community partners joined the effort. Today, Homebound Meals delivers hot and frozen meals to clients on 20+ routes every weekday.
Since 2017, Homebound Meals, Inc., has been a certified Medically Tailored Meals provider, meeting the highest standards in medical nutrition. We also uphold the concept of ‘Food as Medicine’, which was created 40 years ago by the Aspen Institute to achieve nutrition security and improve health amongst older adults.
Our clients’ meals are prepared fresh daily or frozen weekly, designed to meet specific medical and dietary needs. Diets can accommodate clients with diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, renal issues, and more.
We serve clients no matter their circumstances. In fact, we became a Medicaid vendor in 2024, which allows us to serve even more at-risk homebound clients.
Our mission is made possible with a corps of 140 active volunteers, some of whom have driven for decades. Beyond nutrition, each delivery provides a wellness check and a point of human connection, which we believe to be just as important as the food that is delivered.
With a committed staff, board of directors, and volunteer drivers, over 1.6 million meals have been delivered to homebound individuals since Homebound Meals’ inception.
